DAREDEVILS will be taking brave steps to raise money for a hospice by walking on fire and glass.
St Peter & St James Hospice in Chailey is hoping to raise vital funds for the charity's work for people with life-threatening illnesses.

Brave volunteers have already agreed to walk barefoot across the 15ft long path of fire to fundraise for the charity including Bright FM DJ Chris Bailey.

He said: "This has to be my most exciting and hottest challenge yet. The breakfast listeners have already started to show their support. I just hope there's a cold bucket of water nearby on the night."

When it is time to walk on the coals the fire lane will be burning at a core temperature of over 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

The glass walk contains a variety of glass bottles, resulting in a thick bed of broken glass.

Organisers say anyone is capable of doing it and each participant will take part in a mandatory training seminar before they begin.

Jo Claxton, from the hospice's fundraising department, has agreed to take part in both fire and glasswalking.

She said: "I have worked here for over two years now.

"Without the support of the local community our services would not exist and we have to raise £3,600 every day just to keep going. I hoping lots of other people will join me in this challenge. It sounds very scary but I've been assured that it's all mind over matter so fingers crossed."

Karen Lambert from the hospice's fundraising department added: "This event is a real first for us and we're looking for brave people who are up to the challenge.

"We've adjusted what we're asking people to raise so the deal now is that it's £30 to enter to do both events but if you raise £150 in sponsorship you get your £30 back."

Both events are taking place at The Potters Pub in Station Road, Burgess Hill on October 25, with glasswalking at 5.30pm and firewalking at 8.30pm.

For further information and an entry form telephone Karen on 01444 471598, email fundraising@stpeter-stjames.org.uk or visit www.stpeter-stjames.org.uk.
