A FORMER Shoreham College pupil was among those remembering the sacrifices made by Royal Navy personnel in the First World War.
Commander Andy Rogers, who grew up in Shoreham and attended Shoreham College in the late 1970s, joined the Royal Navy in 1982.

He is currently serving with NATO at Mons, in Belgium.

On November 6, he laid a miniature white ensign at the grave of one of the 21 Royal Navy staff and four Royal Marines buried at Passchendaele New British Cemetery.

Tyne Cot Cemetery

Cdr Rogers then took part in memorial services there and at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest war cemetery in the world.

A total of 11,953 Commonwealth servicemen are buried or commemorated there.

Cdr Rogers, whose family continues to live in Shoreham, said: "I really appreciated the opportunity to come and show my respect for all those, both from the Royal Navy and the other services, who gave their lives during World War One, especially in the 90th anniversary year of the Arm-istice.

"It was very moving to visit both Passchendaele and the cemetery at Tyne Cot."
