I NOTICED your front page headline "Border Dispute" on last week's Shoreham Herald when visiting the M&S store at the Holmbush Centre on Saturday afternoon.
How stupid are the people of Fishersgate?
Their postcode has absolutely nothing to do with where they live geographically.
The postcode was devised and is still used simply as a method of sorting the mail and became more and more important as
improvements to mechanisation were developed.
It was originally for sole use by the Post Office and Royal Mail, but clearly they recognised it had benefits over the decades for numerous companies who now use the postcode for their own databases.
It is a business tool.
Royal Mail's delivery rounds cover lots of "political", parish, geographical and other boundaries – so what? It's just the way they do their business and it's ridiculous to think of it as anything else.
It's just the same with standard dialling codes for telephones eg 01273 indicates it is linked to the Brighton exchange and 01424 is the Hastings area.
You don't see people getting confused by their phone numbers, so why should they have such a problem with their postcode?
