WHAT a wonderful treat we had when Les Enfants de l'Espoir (Children of Hope) choir from Besançon, in France, gave their concert at St Mary's Church, Shoreham, on July 16, towards the end of their UK tour.
With their infectious enthusiasm, joyful singing and colourful costumes, they delighted the large audience who turned out to hear them – and who expressed their appreciation of the choir's outstanding performances, not only with their applause, but a
lso by their giving.
The collection raised £610, while sales of the choir's CDs brought in a further £135, with all the proceeds going to their charities supporting needy children in Thailand and the Ivory Coast.
Our thanks once again to the children themselves, to Jérôme Giradet, their conductor, and their kind hosts and hostesses in Shoreham, who put a huge amount of time, effort and enthusiasm into organising this event and helping to make it such a triumph.
For their part, the choir's tour organiser in Besançon has written to Ross Williams, our director of music, to say that the children are all agreed that Shoreham was the most satisfying leg of the tour, that the collection was apparently the largest sum raised anywhere, that the UK tour as a whole has left a very positive feeling about the British in all respects, and that I'm sure you will wish to pass on our sincere thanks to the people of Shoreham.
