WITH reference to the excellent article in last week's Herald (September 25) regarding the Southlands site and the Shoreham Society's concerns over the lack of protection of the remaining buildings, one of which, the refectory hall, would make a fine community centre.
What I find extraordinary is the comment from the leader of Adur District Council, Neil Parkin: "As a member of the Shoreham Society, I can say no one has spoken to me."
I would say to Neil – come off it. You knew very well the concerns expressed b
y many people, including myself.
In fact, I was so concerned that I contacted my MP, Tim Loughton, who kindly arranged a site visit for many concerned people, including myself, and you also attended, on March 14 this year.
At that meeting, we all felt that very little effort was being made to make repairs, to the roofs in particular, and, to date, nothing has changed.
Many demands for action have been made, and ignored. Adur District Council has certain powers and responsibilities. Why has it chosen to ignore them?.
For information, the Southlands site was designated an "area of conservation" way back in 1993.
Some demolition of buildings was carried out in about 1998, despite this designation, and a previous redevelopment attempt was aborted in 2000.
In 2003, the site was acquired by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, which, in turn, appointed English Partnerships in 2005 to redevelop the site.
English Partnerships has a "preferred developer" in Crest Nicholson. I understand this developer is about to go public with its plans for the site.
