WHILE sitting outside Toast by the Coast, in East Street, Shoreham, getting a European "feel" of the atmosphere with an espresso and croissant, I nearly choked when I read about some very shortsighted suggestion by someone at the county council who has obviously never been abroad.
To remove all tables, etc., from outside Shoreham's cafés/restaurants and thus deprive the residents and the many tourists the pleasures it gives one to have a coffee outside – and thus give Shoreham the ever growing publicity of being abroad, withou
t having to go abroad.
This person has obviously never been to Paris, Milan, Nice, Cannes, etc., and soaked up the atmosphere that sitting out can give to tourists.
If their local authorities were to ever suggest what he has suggested, there would be uproar.
Has he nothing else to think about other than depriving Shoreham of such pleasures.
What does the tourist board say about this nonsense?
I suggest that all the cafés and restaurants get a petition signed immediately by everyone who passes or visits them and send it immediately to the council.
Make it a national and television protest and get the rest of the country behind the traders/owners of these super cafés and restaurants.
And get questions asked of whoever at the council has suggested this.
Even pack him off to Paris for a few days to soak up the atmosphere that we have at the moment on the streets of Shoreham.
