IN his rather cheap attack on both the monarchy and the RNLI, Mr Boniface ('The right royal cheek of it all') would have done well to research some facts before putting pen to paper (Herald, July 3).
Although a Royal Charter is officially granted by the head of state, this is entirely on the advice of the Privy Council.
The Privy Council consists of cabinet ministers and a number of junior ministers.
While some of us might not be keen on t
he current lot, they are most definitely elected.
The assumption that, as the RNLI has royal in the title, it is somehow the play thing of the royal family is, quite frankly, insulting to the scores of RNLI fund-raisers, not to mention the predominantly volunteer crews who risk their lives to save others.
Does Mr Boniface apply his misguided beliefs to the British Red Cross (granted a Royal Charter in 1908), the Royal British Legion (1925) or the Commonwealth Graves Commission (1917)?
What about the Sports Council, or the University of Sussex or even Brighton and Hove Council?
Perhaps Mr Boniface would like to write, retracting his comments?
