ADUR District Council leader Neil Parkin questions whether the world has gone mad.
Perhaps the lunatics really are in charge of the asylum.

He blames "a small group of nimbys" for delaying the new Shoreham lifeboat station.

Last-minute petitions against the proposed new roadway and parking area on Kingston Beach were signed by 24 of the 25 residents of Brighton Road whom we had time to canvass.

It is the council itself that is causing the delay, by trying to sneak these proposals through with the application for the new station.

Mr Parkin says the new entrance to Kingston Beach village green would be locked to all but the lifeboat crew and rowing club members.

The council is already allowing the tenants and customers of the artists' studio, now located in the old Sea Scout hut, to park on the village green. Would they also be given keys?

How, then, could the council justify allowing access to the parking area for a favoured few and denying access to all other "users of the beach"?

The council leader states that "the beach will be better and more controlled".

This begs the question.

Why has the beach not been better and more controlled in the past?

Some of us have spoken to members of the lifeboat crew and they deny requesting the parking area in the middle of the green.

When the council applied for Kingston Beach to be given village green status, it was to be for "the enjoyment and recreation of local residents and visitors"; not to become a car park.

Yes, we are trying to protect the village green and the council ought to be doing all in its power to help us.

And implying that we may be responsible for lives being lost, because of the delay, is shameful.
