I WAS interested to read Mr Ernie Mustard's letter, "Give in to writing compulsion", in the Shoreham Herald.
He begins his letter with some waffling psychobabble before mentioning that only infrequently does he deign to read the newspaper.
He then asks the question as to why some readers feel they need to write on a weekly basis.
Has he never he
ard of columnists who do just that in almost every paper – including the Herald.
Perhaps he hasn't yet noticed Liz Ruby's excellent A boy called Chickie.
And why does he have a problem with local writers airing their views in a letters page?
Surely that is the whole point of a letters page, which is a form of soapbox for writers.
I am disappointed that he misses the point altogether when stating that some writers wish only to see their name in bold italics.
I'd like to inform him that if you are serious about a career as a freelance writer (as I am), you need to build up a portfolio of varied published work.
No literary agent or editor will take you seriously in today's world unless you can prove that you are published.
