AS THE one who originally resurrected the Kingston Barn in 1985, I feel that too much blame has been laid at the door of Adur District Council in regard to the current state of repair of the building.
Before the barn was eventually opened in 1986, a thorough inspection/survey of the building was carried out, and after a schedule of repairs was carried out the building was found to be sound.
Thereafter, annual inspections were carried out by the council.
As and when I showed any concern regarding the fabric of the building, the council responded immediately.
Therefore, it has to be said, those who succeeded me should also have kept a careful eye on the building, bearing in mind its great age, and it is they who should take a fair proportion of the blame.
After all, it was their responsibility as leaseholders, to report any structural problems immediately they arose as is required of occupiers of all council-owned buildings. Clearly they did not.
The Kingston Barn has stood intact for hundreds of years and as such, I find it incredible that suddenly it should be found in a state of collapse.
The current damage to the building did not happen overnight, it was a gradual process and the initial signs indicating the current problems would have been evident and should have been brought to the council's attention immediately.
