SHOREHAM basketball star Ben Mockford has been named in the final 12-man Great Britain Under-20 squad for the European Championships in Romania next month.
The squad was cut from 15, and point-guard or shooting-guard Mockford, 6ft 2in, is the youngest in the team, at only 18.

He secured his place after impressing at a week-long training camp in Aldershot, and in two international games against France. In the first international, Mockford top-scored with 22 points.

Earlier this week, Mockford was at another training camp at Aldershot and yesterday (Wednesday) flew to Austria for another training camp and more international matches.

He said: "Although I had confidence in myself, I wasn't sure if I'd make the squad because I'm only 18, and it's an Under-20 squad.

"In the international games against France, I did pretty good. I top-scored in the first game, and in the second game, I was given more specific roles to play, which went well.

"We've got a good team, and we'll go to the Championships to try to win our division."

The Championships are split into two divisions, A and B, and GB are in the B division — but targeting promotion. They start on August 1, and GB are in a group with Norway, Portugal, Finland and Macedonia.

Mockford completed a one-year scholarship at Oak Hill Academy in the USA earlier this year, and in September is going to the Apex Academy in New Jersey.
