STRIKER Danny Curd sprinkled a touch of FA Cup magic on Saturday with a second-half brace which sent Mile Oak cruising into a preliminary round home tie with Arundel.
Curd scored his first, and Oak's second, after 56 minutes. He beat defender Daniel Oliver to the ball, following a great pass from Mark Curram, rounded keeper Dean Cupit and slid the ball home from a tight angle.

Ten minutes later, it was game over. Curd again outmuscled Oliver in the penalty box, and his effort trickled over the line despite Cupit getting a hand to it.

The comprehensive scoreline was no more than the hosts deserved after an excellent opening 45 minutes. They totally outplayed the visitors, and should have been at least three goals up by the break.

After Curram's early header was well saved, Oak took a 10th-minute lead. Paul Eaton applied the finishing touch after Curd's effort had been parried by Cupit.

The pacey Curd caused the Bookham backline all sorts of problems with his movement. He nearly opened his account on 14 minutes, when he broke the offside trap, but his lob sailed over.

Curd was then unlucky on 28 minutes when his deft touch was hacked off the line by Stuart Padgett, following an excellent Titus Paterson cross.

Oak continued to play attractive passing football, with Chris Pulling and man of the match Graham Martin, excellent in midfield. Martin himself could have had a brace, but on 25 minutes saw a chip go narrowly over the bar, and then, just before the break, watched his close-range effort go wide of the post.

Pulling, also, was unlucky not to be on the scoresheet when his cross-cum-shot was tipped onto the bar by a back-peddling Cupit.

Bookham, a league higher in the football pyramid, incurred the wrath of their manager Glyn Mandeville during the interval, but his words had little effect. Padgett's header from Alex McGregor's free kick on 63 minutes was all they could muster, and Oak skipper Steve Porter nullified all attacking threats with an excellent display at the back.

Oak could have added a fourth in the final minutes, but substitute Tony Burnett shot wide after approach work from fellow sub Jamie Ash.

Oak boss Anthony Whittington said: "Everyone played well, and we could have been four ahead by half-time.
"Arundel will be a tough game in the next round."

MILE OAK: Stenning; Livesey, Porter, Paine, Sargent; Martin, Curram, Pulling, Paterson; Curd, Eaton. Subs: Ash (Paterson 71) Fleming (Martin 76) Burnett (Curd 85), W.Whittington, Loughlin.
