Beeding in Bloom chairman Dudley Rushmere presented winners with their prizes at the group's annual celebration.

The presentations were made at the Rising Sun pub, Upper Beeding, and group secretary Tricia Toe said a good time was had by all.

"It was a very good day," she added. "It's always good fun when we have these awards."

Tricia said attention would now turn to the next competition in the gardening calendar, with green-fingered villagers keeping their fingers crossed.

"We are eagerly awaiting the results of the South East in Bloom competition on September 3.

"We are really looking forward to seeing how we did in that," she said.

The village's Riverside Cara-van Park was awarded the best commercial property prize for the third year running.

Owner Roger Paxton told the Herald how he designed the displays, while green-fingered residents, including Pat Gonzalez, carried out the work.

"There are a few people here who put all the effort in," he said. "I help out, but I'm not a gardener.

"I come up with the ideas and they love doing the work. It is a community thing."

Among the other winners was Carole Symons, who received the Jim Heritage Cup, for best overall garden, at her home in Hyde Street.

She said: "I have had the cup three times now. My husband and I were very pleased."

Michael White, of Newland Road, was presented with a certificate for the best formal front garden.

He said: "I didn't expect it. I have won a few times, but not in that category."

The full list of winners and runners-up in the Beeding in Bloom awards was as follows (runners-up in brackets):-

Commercial property: River-side Caravan Park (BP Garage).

Allotment: Jeff Dunstone (M. Piper).

Formal garden: Michael White (Joan and Roger Hornsby).

Cottage garden: Lynda Piper (Suzanne Everard).

Unusual garden: Elaine and Tony Ellmer (Brenda Emsley).

"Other" garden: Carole Symons (Ann Ball). Hanging basket and container display: Elaine and Tony Ellmer (Henry Comlidge).

Neighbourhood award: 9 to 12 St Peters Green (28 to 32 Newland Road). Overall garden: Carole Symons.
