MP Nick Herbert was on hand to help deliver lunches to elderly people in Steyning.
The Shadow Justice Secretary swapped his usual duties to shadow local Meals on Wheels organiser Barbara Fisher on her visit to Dingeman's Court, in Shooting Field.
Mrs Fisher is looking for new volunteers to help deliver meals to residents in the Steyning area.
The Meals on Wheels service is funded by West Sussex County Council and relies on volunteers from the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) to deliver hot meals on weekdays and frozen meals for weekends.
WRVS volunteer Mrs Fisher said: "I was really pleased that Nick took the time to see for himself the Meals on Wheels service provided by the WRVS.
"The meals are delivered by a dedicated band of volunteers, some of whom have been providing this service for many years.
"The service is a lifeline for many people who might not otherwise have any social contact during the day.
"It's not just about providing a nutritious meal – our volunteers are also trained to make sure that our customers, some of the most vulnerable members of society, are safe and well.
"We are in real need of additional volunteers to carry on this work and would welcome people who are able to spare a couple of hours each month."
Anyone who would like more information on the Meals on Wheels service, or is interested in becoming a volunteer in the Steyning area, should call Mrs Fisher on 01903 814302 or send an email to
