Work to replace expansion joints at Court Bridge – where the road crosses the River Adur – started on Monday (September 8).
The decking will also be re-waterproofed and the carriageway and footways resurfaced.
Two-way traffic lights are in operation during the £193,000 project,
which is expected to take 11 weeks to complete.
A spokesman for West Sussex County Council, which is reponsible for the highway, said: "Regular inspections have been monitoring water leakage through the bridge joints.
"Patch repairs have been carried out on these in the past but it is now imperative that a longer-lasting repair is carried out to stop water damage to the highway."
"To enable the works to take place there will be extensive use of two-way traffic lights. We recognise that this will be an inconvenience to
drivers and we apologise for this, but the work is essential."
Local councillors urged drivers to be patient during the roadworks and appealed to them not to "rat run" through Bramber and Upper
Beeding in a bid to avoid possible delays.
Upper Beeding Parish Council chairman David Coldwell said: "The Bramber and Upper Beeding high streets are both extremely busy and we wouldn't want to see too much traffic going through there."
And vice-chairman Joyce Shaw added: "Speaking as a person that lives in Beeding, it's going to cause a bit of chaos – but if it's got to be
done, it's got to be done.
"Whatever way they go it's going to be a nightmare, so it's going to
cause problems for people."
